As the sunlight returns, so does amazing skies

These are some pictures of the sykline down here in Mcmurdo as the sun begins to rise again. I cannot express how beautiful and colorful they are. If i wasn't here myself, i think i would have a hard time believing that these pictures were real.

How light does it get during different times of day in early July? Like, say, July 2nd. Is it like the last picture in this set or for the set you had for July 29th? Or is it totally pitch-black all the time? The images one sees from this part of the world seem to contradict one another, and I'm doing some research about July (part of Winter) in Antarctica. If it does get as light as it shows in these pictures, is it during the morning (around 9 AM) or afternoon? And can you see the white snow with the naked eye? I'm curious about what visibility there is with that kind of limited light. Thanks!
